Guidelines for authors

The journal Anales de Teología publishes research articles, translations, and book reviews in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. Manuscripts are submitted through the journal’s platform and must comply with these guidelines and its editorial policies, particularly those on Integrity, Originality, and Authorship, Use and Limits of Artificial Intelligence, and Open Access and Copyright. The stages and time frames for assessment are described in the Editorial Process and Peer Review policy.

Types of contribution

Research articles make an original contribution to theological debate, with a clearly identifiable thesis or objective and a sustained argument that engages with sources and relevant scholarly literature. They range from 5,000 to 10,000 words, including notes and references. They begin with an introduction and end with conclusions; authors may choose the titles of the intervening sections. Sections are numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals, from the introduction through the conclusions, and subsections use decimal numbering (2.1, 2.2).

Translations present a previously unpublished translation of a theological text whose translation is relevant to its study or discussion, or a duly justified new translation. They must identify the original edition used and include, where appropriate, an introduction or critical apparatus that contextualizes the text. At the time of submission, evidence must be provided that the original work is in the public domain, or permission from the rights holder must be attached authorizing its translation and open access publication under the journal’s license. Translations must not exceed 10,000 words, including the introduction, unless otherwise agreed in advance with the Editorial Team.

Book reviews examine recent theological works, preferably published within the three years preceding submission. They must go beyond summarizing the work: their purpose is to reconstruct its main arguments, situate it within the author’s intellectual development or the theological issues it addresses, and offer a reasoned critical assessment of its contributions and limitations in dialogue with other relevant works. They must not exceed 3,000 words and must begin with the full bibliographic reference for the reviewed work, formatted according to the journal’s Citation Guidelines and followed by the page count and ISBN. Citations follow the same guidelines; after the first full note, passages from the reviewed work may be cited using page numbers in parentheses. Book reviews do not undergo peer review but are subject to the editorial assessment established in the Editorial Process and Peer Review policy.

Preparing a submission

Articles and translations undergo double-anonymous review and must be submitted as two Microsoft Word (.docx) documents. The identification document contains the work’s title, each author’s full name, institutional affiliations with city and country, email address, ORCID identifier if available, acknowledgments, and the declarations required by the Integrity, Originality, and Authorship policy. The anonymous document contains the complete work and must not include names, affiliations, acknowledgments, project references, or other identifying information, including in the file properties. References to the authors’ own work must be written in the third person in this document. Book reviews are not anonymous and are submitted as a single document containing the author’s details and declarations.

Research articles include a title, an abstract of up to 150 words, and up to five keywords in the article’s language and, if that language is not English, also in English. The abstract presents the problem, thesis or objective, approach, and main conclusions of the work. Translations and book reviews include their title in the language of the text and in English.

Author information must also be entered on the platform during submission, and affiliations are selected from the ROR registry when the institution is listed there. Providing an ORCID identifier is recommended; its absence does not prevent review or publication. Declarations cover the use of generative artificial intelligence, conflicts of interest, and funding, and, for works with multiple authors, author contributions according to the CRediT taxonomy. In the published version, they appear in a final section placed before the reference list.

Works must be unpublished under the terms of the Integrity, Originality, and Authorship policy. Under that policy, a work derived from a thesis, conference paper, or other academic document may be considered if it constitutes a substantial reworking and identifies its original source. The prior deposit of a version in a repository or preprint server is likewise not considered prior publication. In both cases, this circumstance must be disclosed in the comments to the Editorial Team, with the relevant reference or link.

All contributions include a final reference list. Citations and references follow the journal’s Citation Guidelines, based on the notes and bibliography system of The Chicago Manual of Style. Any recognized citation system is accepted for review, provided it is applied fully and consistently; the accepted version must comply entirely with the journal’s guidelines.
