Metaphysics and the Logic of Love: Marion and the Phenomenological Legacy of Augustine

Abstract

Contrary to Jean-Luc Marion’s contention that a thought of love is lacking in Martin Heidegger’s existential phenomenology, this paper argues that a thinking of love —and one directly indebted to Saint Augustine— is in fact central to Heidegger’s critique of modern metaphysics and its culmination in the reign of technology. The difference between Marion and Heidegger on the question of love, the paper goes on to claim, rests elsewhere: for Marion, love’s extra-worldly intentionality aspires to the eternal, whereas for Heidegger love’s intentionality attends at bottom to our inescapably temporal and mortal Being-in-the-World.
