Subclass: The Collateral Damage of Liquid Modernity. According to the Thought of Zygmunt Bauman
Main Article Content
Abstract
The society that exists today is constantly changing and far from being monotonous. According to Zygmunt Bauman, it is liquid because everything flows without stopping and without limits. It is a society in which trends are constantly changing based on what is current. Everything is related to consumption, which enables individuals to maintain or assimilate a social status that allows them to be part of the consumer world. The benchmark of this society is to consume and then discard, and individuals must be prepared for change. They cannot be left out of the latest trends, or they will be marginalized; therefore, they cannot stop consuming. Thus, constant work and the value of money have become the "strategies" that allow society to prepare for all possible changes that may arise. They aspire to a social status that will finally allow them to overcome the fear (of not belonging) that the consumer liquidity has established. Due to all these characteristics of the community, the objective of this essay is to analyze how groups that do not have the necessary resources to keep up with trends are marginalized and dehumanized because they cannot consume and depend on others; becoming the worst fear of the liquid society.
