Institution of a conceptless eidetics

Abstract

The article argues that phenomenology is not merely a descriptive method, but rather an inversion of the philosophical order: it submits being to the test of appearing. The tension that guides our argument does not simply oppose essence and phenomenon but rather concerns two internal demands of phenomenology: on the one hand, the need to recognize invariants or directions of sense; on the other, the unfinished, horizontal, and variable openness of all appearing. Within this framework, the article maintains that this tension is not resolved by abandoning essence, but by elaborating an eidetics of appearing, in which the essential does not function as a logical universal, but as an operative structure immanent to phenomenality. The text takes Marc Richir and his proposal of an “eidetics without concepts” as its central axis, reading it through the problem of institution, whereby sense is stabilized, transmitted, and made available for reactivation, without being closed off in a conceptual definition. The counterpoint with Merleau-Ponty makes it possible to clarify both the scope of institution and its limit: Richir does not simply extend an ontology of the lived world but introduces an architectonic rupture between phenomenality and the institution of sense.
