Topology of interpretation: the place of hermeneutics in Evential Phenomenology
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article aims to delineate the proper space that ‘hermeneutics’ (and interpretation more broadly) occupies within the framework of contemporary evential phenomenology. Its central claim is that not all phenomena necessarily fall under the purview of hermeneutics in one form or another. Rather, certain phenomena do meet this criterion, while others (those that are exceptional or extraordinary) exhibit a mode of originary and immediate givenness that withdraws from all interpretative appropriation. Defending this thesis calls for a critical dialogue with those who uphold the contrary position —most notably Marion and Romano— but also with phenomenological-hermeneutic thinkers such as Ricoeur.
