Abstract
Recently published by Editorial Universitaria, the new book by professors Jorge Vergara and Alan Martin, Democracy or Market: The Liberalisms of Dewey and Hayek, deepens and broadens the scope of their previous joint work, Thinking About Education. From Friedman to Dewey (2017). In this new work, the authors undertake a rigorous comparative analysis of two strands of liberalism which, although they share a common root, embody profoundly divergent theoretical conceptions: those of John Dewey and Friedrich Hayek, two of the most influential intellectual figures of the 20th century. The book does not merely contrast their respective proposals, but also explores the philosophical traditions and conceptual influences that nourish them, highlighting the decisive role played by the ideas of J. S. Mill and Herbert Spencer in shaping their theoretical frameworks and political visions.
