La tesis del libro Kerkelijk ambt (1980) de Edward Schillebeeckx, sobre el ministerio en la Iglesia, supuso grandes desafíos a la doctrina tradicional de la Iglesia Católica con respecto a la apostolicidad de los ministerios. Este estudio se orienta hacia un análisis de la noción de apostolicidad formulada por Schillebeeckx, presentando las reacciones que su tesis generó tanto en la doctrina teológica de su tiempo, así como en el Magisterio y el posterior debate que tuvo lugar entre la Santa Sede y el profesor en la Universidad Católica de Nimega.
