The thesis of Edward Schillebeeckx’s book Kerkelijk ambt (1980), concerning the ministry of the Church, supposed great challenges to the Church’s traditional doctrine regarding the apostolicity of its ministries. This study is oriented towards an analysis of the notion of apostolicity as formulated by Schillebeeckx, introducing the reactions that his thesis generated in the catholic doctrine of his time, as well as in the Magisterium and the later debate that took place between the Holy See and the professor of the Catholic University of Nijmegen.
