The conflicts of the twentieth century – the World Wars and the Cold War, mainly – caused humanity to stop believing in progress and civilization. That hopelessness, accompanied by the social changes, derived from the conflicts, affect the movements that fight for women’s rights and propitiated the emergence of new feminist ideological currents, many of which were related to postmodernism. The purpose of this paperwork is to show how the Catholic Church answered to a world that, increasingly, requires the recognition of equality between men and women, and the emergence of empty ideologies, lacked of content and meaning. Pope John Paul II expressed his position on these issues in the Mulieris Dignitatem letter, which will be approached from its historical context, highlighting the relevance of his thinking in the current world.
