Hermeneutics and scientific research: scope and limitations
Main Article Content
Abstract
Hermeneutics has occupied a central place in the social sciences since the 20th century. Its foundations have been laid in the work of German philosophers Martin Heidegger and Hans Georg Gadamer. The map of contemporary hermeneutics extends to the studies of Paul Ricoeur and the French post-structuralists (Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida), to the work of Italians Gianni Vattimo and Luigi Pareyson, among many others. Much of the philosophical, political, psychological, literary, but also economic, sociological, and epistemological discussions, among others, see the need to adopt the assumptions of hermeneutics to advance research. Therefore, we must ask ourselves: what are the scope and limitations of hermeneutics for scientific research in the social sciences? Therefore, in this article, we seek, through philosophical reflection, to present some relevant elements to answer this question in its twofold direction.
