Abstract
Chilean author Carlos Peña – a lawyer with a postgraduate degree in sociology and a PhD in philosophy – surprises us once again with a new work. It is an essay on the humanities, their place in today’s society, their relevance, and the vicissitudes to which they are exposed and have been exposed throughout history. Structured into ten sections, plus an introduction, the author develops various reflections on key themes relating to the humanities. These include ‘exaggerations about the humanities’, ‘the challenges’ they face today, ‘the task of the humanities’, ‘the method’, ‘the two cultures: science and the humanities’, ‘the questions of the humanities’ concerning the mystery of language and the mystery of history, the humanities and truth, and the humanities and what it means to be human.
