The operation of an Osterberg cell O-cell used for testing piles with large load in the axial direction is explained. Its main advantage is that it does not require the application of a load on top of the pile. The capacities are obtained for shaft and tip directly and separately. This paper shows the background and results of a series of tests performed with O-cell in foundation piles of great size in the Concón refinery. The data recorded in the field were used to calibrate a numerical model of the test using the finite element software Plaxis 2D. Finally, it is performed a numerical model of a traditional load test, which is compared to the equivalent curve for a traditional test carried out with the data of the executed O-cell load test.
