Abstract

The size at maturity and batch fecundity in common pilchard, Strangomera bentincki, off central Chile are determined with samples from the spawning season, in 1991. The size at first maturity (criterium of 50% of mature females) is at 11 cm of total length. The batch fecundity is 12,059 oocy tes by female, and the relative fecundity is 388 oocy tesgram1 (without ovary). The relationship between batch fecundity (F, number of oocytes) and total weigth (TW, grams) is described by theformula F = 3,194.51 EXP(0.039*TW).
