A LITERATURE REVIEW (1980-1988) ON CONCHOLEPAS CONCHOLEPAS (GASTROPODA, MURICIDAE): FISHERY PROBLEMS AND EXPERIENCES ON RE-STOCKING

Abstract

The paper contains a literalure review of 45 papers directly related with the mollusc Concholepas concholepas published betwcen 1980-1988. A table (Table 1) is included were ihose papers are cited and divided in 7 main topics: General Fishery (7): Populalion Dynamics, Modelling. Re-stocking and Management (10): Reproduciion, Larval Developmeni and Juveniles (6); Ecology and human impact by Coastal gatherers (7); Biochemisiry and Biotechnology (II); General Biologv (3) and Fossil Record (1). Based on this informaiion and previous relevani publications a table is presented (Table 2) which summarizes the fishery problems facing this resource and suggests manageinent actions to be implemented in the short médium and long term. In the short term it is suggested that regional manageinent actions (regional stocks) should be implemented. The national policy, single stock managemenl, used so far should be abandoned. Due to the lackof scientific Information, the maricultureof the loco can not be pul into practice in the short term. It could be achieved in the long term providing the necessary technologies are developed. Biotechnological investigations, mainly oriented to solve the problems of settleinent and tnelamorphosis of the loco larvae. are urgently needed. The potentialsof the re-stocking techniques, through the management of small Coastal areas or the rotation of fishing grounds. are highlighted. Results on re-slockings of subtidal populations of locos (table 3) at the Estación Costera de Investigaciones Marinas, Las Cruces. Central Chile, are presented.
