Abstract

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) marked a watershed in the complex hispanic-mexican relations. The ties that the Spanish republicans and socialists forged with the Mexican revolutionary regime during the Second Republic, and the cardenist govemment's owo identification with the situation the republicans in Spain were going through, detennined the Mexican politics towards the Spanish conflict. The Mexican govemment not only delivered weapons and supplies to the republican forces, but it also acted as an mediator to purchase armament in other countries and mobilized its diplomatic corps to help its Spanish ally, opposing the initiative of some Latin-American nations and assuming as its own the defense of the Spanish cause in the League of Nations.
