The annual cycle of ovary maturation was siudies in 150 females of Macrodon ancylodon (Bloch & Schneider. 1801) (Teleostei: Sciaenidae) recollected from april 1982 to april 1983. in the Coastal water of the La Plata River. off Montevideo. Uruguay. The histological analysis was with standard hemaioxjline eosine technique and peryodic acid Schiff hcmatoxiline method. with 5-10 micron sections. In addition. the gonadosomatic Índex was calculated for each individual. The annual cycle of ovary maturation in M. ancylodon showed a cycle of.six stages: rccovery. maturing. mature. hydratcd. partially spent and regressive spenl stage. The spawning was with a fractionated patiern and a ovarían synchronic maturing proccess. The breeding scason for M. ancylodon extended from november (middlc spring) to february (late summer) with máximum activity in december (middle summer).
