Abstract

The principal characterics oí industrial waste produced by a fishfactones located in Rocuant salt-marsh. Talcahuano was analyzed. This faetones produced fishmeal, oil and frozen ftsh. Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, total greases, BOD5,. COD, and POC were nieasured on the liquid waste. The levels found on these paranieters allow us to conclude that the main impact on the surrounding environment was produced by the fishmeal and oilplant, being its effluent volume one order of magnitude greater than the frozenfish plant (i.e., 1.234 nr’/h). However, the frozenfish plant effluent valúes for BOD5 (4,300 mg O2/l) and total grease (8.3 g/1) were extremely high when compared to fishmeal effluent content. According to this results it is suggested here, the development and application of management and control policies related to the standards for industrial waste. This should take into account the assimilation capacity of natural receptor bodies, which at present are in a critical situation along the chilean coast.
