Abstract

Seaweed production in Chile has shown an overall increasing trend over the last nine yeare. Recorded harvesting activities have expandcd from Central Chile (Coquimbo-Concepción) through nonhern and Southern Chile (up to Antofagasta and Chiloé). Total seaweed exports have increased from 1,587 tons (20-35% moisture) in 1967 to 10,903 tons in 1975. Total export trade of seaweed, and seaweed products rised from US$826,678.00 in 1968 lo US$7,989,765.00 in 1975. The total number of fishermen engaged
in scaweed-related activities increased from about 2,300 in 1970 to about 5,250 in 1975, while the number of exporters rised from 4 in 1968 to 25 in 1975.
