In March 2020, due to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, education systems abruptly and indefinitely suspended their on-campus activities. Particularly, in all levels of higher education, professors faced the challenge of transforming the traditional educational process and migrated to virtual environments. Considering the pursued changes and the steps taken from an on-campus modality to a virtual modality, the need of knowing the characteristics of Effective Teaching in higher education institutions arises. The objective of this research work was conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) that allowed the identification of the theoretical and conceptual elements and the conclusions of some empirical studies about the characteristics of Effective Teaching in on-campus and virtual higher education. The SLR was conducted in four stages: planning, searching, selecting, and summarizing 61 studies. These studies showed that class planning, command of subject matter, the use of diverse didactic strategies and methodologies, feedback practices and the promotion of critical thinking were some of the characteristics of On-Campus Effective Teaching. Whereas in the latter modality, course design and the successful interaction among professors and students were the main features of Virtual Effective Teaching. Funding and infrastructure prevail as factors related to On-Campus Effective Teaching; on the other hand, training and field knowledge stand out as factors related to Virtual Effective Teaching.
