Abstract

A length-structured versión oí Virtual Population Analysis was used to estímate, on a monthly basis, the biomass, recruitment, and fishing mortality of anchoveta (.Engraulis ringens) off Northern Chile for the period 1986 to 1989. The recruitment is considered as the number of fishes of 7.25 cm of total length, of about 7 month-old. The stock recruitment relationships type Ricker curve fitted to the data showed a strong denso-dependen t effect. The impact of the 1987 El Niño event on the recruitment is also demonstrated.
