Abstract

The importance of systematics in the study of living organisms and their interaction with the environment has been a matter of permanent concern to a group of biologists and evolutionists. The correct identification of species becomes nowadays particularly necessary given the considerable increase in the knowledge of the organisms and the importance of carrying out adequate interpretations and precise estimations of the biológica world (Mayr, 19o9; Carriker, 1976; Lee, 1978). In the case of species as peculiar and purportedly well known as Concholepas concholepas, the amount of published information is often far larger than that traditionally considered in taxonomical papers written within that conservativo frame dealing only with citations
of new localities, synonyms and nomenclatura! problems. They usually exelude all strictly biológica! information, equally necessary to any actualized taxonomic analysis. Such is the case with the anatómica! work done in C. concholepas by Haller (1888), Maldonado et al. (1965) or the radulardescriptionsby Troschel (1866) and Cookc (1919), seídon considered in the taxonomic background of C. concholepas. Additional information including reproduction, behavior and population dynamics is incorporated in this paper to the
taxonomy of this species.
